Combine Harvester
A combine harvester is a machine designed to harvest the various different types of agricultural grains, the most common being corn, wheat, barley and rye. There are three phases of harvesting- reaping, binding and threshing- and in the combine harvester they are ‘combined’ into one, saving a vast amount of time and resources. They were invented in a horse-drawn format in 1834 by Hiram Moore, before the modern diesel or petrol engine powered models were initiated in 1953.Combine
A combine today may also feature the rotary design, an innovation which relied on centrifugal force rather than simply gravity. Initially the grain was passed through external bars on a cylinder, in order to strip it form the stalk, but the rotary design, initiated in 1975, has the grain pass through a helical rotor. There are pros and cons to both the rotary and the conventional design, and they are both still operational; which is the best choice depends on a variety of situational factors.
