Australian Combines Shortage 01/02/2008

Because of increasing global agricultural prices, it has been claimed that there is a potential farm machinery shortage looming in Australia, particularly in relation to combines. There has been a large level of imported farm machinery equipment, including combines into Australia, particularly from America, and consequently may make it increasingly difficult for Australian combine dealers to compete with American combine production.

It has been reported that combine harvesters which are made to Australian specifications take over six months to reach Australia one the imported product has been ordered., meaning that Australian farmers are forced to purchase their combines promptly to avoid shipping and import delays.

However, this is not the case worldwide. In Finland, there has been a reported increase in the manufacture of combines with Finnish combine company Sempo Rosenlow producing many combines for Finland and areas across Russia, Europe and Asia. The increase in the popularity and consequently in sales of combines can be seen as partially a result of more expensive energy costs, which has led to a heightened popularity of bio-fuel energy, relying upon the harvesting of corn and other grains. Clearly, an increase in demand for corn and grains for use in producing fuel has caused a knock on increase in the demand for combines for harvesting purposes. Other potential reasons for the rising popularity of combines in some parts of the world can be seen as the subsidiary programs offered to some countries which have recently joined the European Union. These subsidiary programs offer assistance to small and medium sized Eastern European farms in purchasing heavy farm machinery and equipment, including the purchases of combines. In a sense, this offer of assistance is very appropriately timed, as it is apparent that there is a high need for combines to meet demand for crop harvesting, particularly due to the incentive of ever-growing prices for crops and grains on the global market.
