Vineyards To Get Help With Newly Designed Tractors 06/02/2008

Unlike most farming, vineyard growers face very different land and space issues than other mixed or livestock farmers that use tractors for everyday operations. John Deere, the iconic American farm equipment manufacturer has taken this problem on and designed smaller, narrower tractors specifically for the narrow lanes of vineyards, nurseries and orchards. John Barry product manager for John Deere said, “We have had small tractors but none designed from the start for these uses.” brbr

The smallest model, the 20A is only 32 inches wide and has a wheelbase of 39 inches, with a 21 hp, two cylinder Lombardini engine. The new design will be able to turn on a radius of only 4 feet. The retail cost will be $14,000. In an historic cross family meeting of American business, the tractor was presented at a meeting for vineyard managers at Landmark Vineyards in Kenwood California. The winery’s owner, Michael Calhoun is the great-great grandson of company founder John Deere.
